Yama – the Dikpal of South

Yama Introduction

Yama is the hindu god of death and justice. He resides in Yamaloka and is one of the dikpalas. He is the protector of South direction.

Sculpture Information

The sculpture of Yama is located in Vishnu Temple at Siddheshwara, Newasa, Maharashtra (India). The temple temple was built by Peshwas around 1767 in Hemadpanthi style.

Standing Yama is depicted with four hands. Upper hands are carrying Khatvanga (club with skull) and Gada (mace). Lower hands are holding Japmala / Akshamala (rosery) and Vedas (holy book). We can see circular designs behind Yama’s head, probably sign of Pasa (noose).

Yama vahana (mount) buffalo named Paundraka is standing near god’s feet.
