God Surya Introduction:

Lord Surya is the god of the Sun. He is the ruler of the planets and one of the Adityas (son of Aditi).

Sculpture Information:

The stone sculpture of Lord Surya on a chariot is located near a traditional water spout in the Dattatreya area of Bhaktapur (Nepal). The statue is from the Malla Dynasty period i.e. circa 16th century.

In a typical depiction of lord Surya, he standing on a chariot with his wives Sanjana and Chhaya on both sides. His wives are shooting arrows, a symbol of their initiative to challenge darkness. He is holding Padmas (lotus) in his hands and wears a sun crown.

Aruna, the charioteer of Surya, in the middle, is controlling seven horses.
