Jaya-Vijaya Introduction

Jaya and Vijaya are dwarpalas (door keepers) of Lord Vishnu’s abode. There is an interesting story in Puranas about the curse by Kumaras to Jaya-Vijaya.

Along with Garuda, Jaya-Vijaya are one the most common iconography of Lord Vishnu related temples. They can be seen at the entrance of such temples.

Sculpture Information

Just like most of the Vishnu temple’s, Jaya and Vijaya’s sculptures are located at Vishnu Temple of Siddheshwara in Newasa, Maharashtra (India).

Being a Dwarpalas (door keepers) of Lord Vishnu’s abode, they are placed on both the sides of the entrance of the temple. Both of them share identical design and iconography.

These standing dwarpalas are holding long danda (staff) in one hand and Chakra (discuss) as there weapon in other hand.

The temple was built by Peshwas around 1767 in Hemadpanthi style.
