Ishana – the Dikpal of Northeast

Ishana – the Dikpal of Northeast
Style / Dynasty: Peshwa Dynasty

Ishana or Isana god is a vedic god. He is one of the dikpalas (guardian of directions) and is a protector of North East direction.

Many time Isana is mistaken by Lord Shiva due to the common iconography of the both. Isana is often regarded as one of the five aspects or forms of Shiva, known as the “Pancha Brahmas”. In vedas, he is also regarded as one of the Rudra.

In this sculpture of Ishana, he is holding Trisula (trident) in his upper right hand and damaru in upper left hand.

In lower hands, we can see a Sarpa (snake) in one.

Ishana’s mount is white Ox which can be seen seating next to his feet.
