Gaja-Markatas (Elephants & Monkeys)

Gaja-Markatas

Gaja-Markata sculpture is located at Vishnu Temple of Siddheshwara in Newasa, Maharashtra (India).

The sculpture is part of the temple’s outer wall designs.

Gaja means an elephant and Markata means a monkey. We can see the fight scene between elephants where both elephant’s tails are up. The aggression of elephants (specially the right one) is well depicted. With the ornaments on them, elephants are domestic with royal family. Looks like, monkey’s are enjoying the fight by either joining the side or just troubling the elephants.

Even with smaller size and minor importance in overall temple design, the sculpture is carved with details.

The temple was built by Peshwas around 1767 in Hemadpanthi style.
