Vel or Sakti is the name applied to the spear. It consists of a metallic piece, either quadrangular or elliptical in shape, with a socket into which a long wooden handle is fixed.

Sakti is most commonly attributed to Lord Kartikaya / Murugan who is god of war. Vel, as a symbol of divinity, is an object of worship in the temples dedicated to Murugan.
