God Varuna along with his consort Varunani or Varuni.
The statue was carved out from Basalt. It dates back to the 8th century CE and was discovered in Karnataka.
The sculpture is on display at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly Prince of Wales Museum), Mumbai.
Varuna and Varuni are seated on Varuna’s Mount Makara. A Pasa (the noose) can be seen in the backdrop which is Varuna’s ayudha (weapon).
