Mithuna Couple at Rajarani Temple, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha (India)
Mithuna means a couple or a couple’s sexual union. Rajarani temple is popularly known as a love temple due to the romantic sculptures across its walls.
In this sculpture, the couple is almost without clothes with tiny bounds around their waists. The male is approaching the lady and she is shy/excited with the imagination of what’s coming next. The lady is putting her fingers on her lips trying to hide her smile in shyness.
Rajarani temple dates back to the 1100th Century CE and is the best example of Kalinga Architecture (Kalinga Panchratha Style). It is built in a Rekha Deul format.
