Varuni, also known as Varunani and Jaldevi, is the consort of Lord Varuna, often depicted with her husband. She is the goddess of wine, who emerged during the Samudra Manthana (churning of the ocean) and chose Varuna as her consort. She is one of the two chief consorts of Varuna, the other being goddess Gauri.
As per Matsya Purana, Varunani is the divine energy of Varuna. As per the story, she was created to drink the blood of a demon Andhaka. She is also one of the 64 yogini(s).
The iconography of Varuni:
Varuni is often shown along with her husband Varuna. Her mount is also Makara just like Lord Varuna. She being a Shakti of Varuna, also holds pasa (noose) in her hand.
As a goddess of wine, she is sometimes shown with a wine pot.
